Usage:
  • Express whether one know how or has ability to do something. In this case, V-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 = ‘know how to do’  is used
  • In opposite case, V-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 = ‘doesn’t know how to do’ is used.
Verbs end in a vowel or ㄹ + -ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다:
쓰다 -- 쓸 줄 알다/모르다   = to write/ to use
고치다 -- 고칠 줄 알다/모르다 = to fix
사용하다 -- 사용할 줄 알다/모르다  = to use
*만들다  -- 만들 줄 알다/모르다 = to make

Verbs end in a consonant + 을 줄 알다/모르다:
입다 -- 입을 줄 알다/모르다  =  to wear
읽다 -- 읽을 줄 알다/모르다  = to read
굽다 -- 구울 줄 알다/모르다  = to roast
짓다 -- 지울 줄 알다/모르다  = to build

Examples
1. 김치찌개를 맛있게 끓일 줄 알아요.
I know how to cook a tasty kimchi stew.
2. 생일케이크를 잘 만들 줄 몰라요.
I don’t know how to make a birthday cake well.
3. 차를 운전할 줄 알아요. 그런데 오토바이를 운전할 줄 몰라요.
I know how to drive a car. But I don’t know how to ride a motorbike.
4. 이 기계를 사용할 줄 알아요?
- 아니요, 할 줄 몰라요. 다른 사람을 물어보세요.
Do you know how to use this machine?
- No, I don’t. Please ask someone else.
5. 수영할 줄 알아요?
Do you know how to swim?
6. 일본어를 할 줄 몰라요.
I don’t know Japanese.

Note: You can also use ‘V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다’ for ‘ability’, however ‘V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다’ has also ‘possibility’, so it is safe to use ‘V-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 for ‘ability’.

E.g. 김치찌개를 맛있게 끓일 줄 알아요.
I know how to cook a tasty kimchi stew.

E.g. 김치찌개를 맛있게 끓일 수 있어요.
I can cook a tasty kimchi stew. (I know how to cook, but I can’t cook it right now because of some reasons)
