L2.79 N(이)라면, A/V-ㄴ/는다면 grammar = If this/that happens, one will/ would... ~ Hypothesize a situation contrary to the past or happening in present or not yet occurred

Usage:
- Hypothesize a situation contrary to the past or happening in present or not yet occurred  = If this happens, one will/ would…

- This expression is often used with -겠어요, -(으)ㄹ 거예요, and -(으)ㄹ 텐데.

- In present tense: -ㄴ/는다면 can be exchanged with -(으)면 without meaning change

- In past tense: -ㄴ/는다면 can be exchanged with -았/었으면 or -았/었더라면 without meaning change

Present tense
Adjective + -다면:
좋다 -- 좋다면
크다 -- 크다면

Verb + -ㄴ/는다면:
오다 -- 온다면 - 오면
사다 - 산다면 -- 사면
먹다 -- 먹는다면 -- 먹으면
먹지 않다 -- 먹지 않는다면 -- 먹지 않으면
공부하다 -- 공부한다면 -- 공부하면

Noun + (이)라면:
부자 -- 부자라면
학생 -- 학생이라면

Past tense
Adjective + 았/었다면:
좋다 -- 좋았다면
크다 -- 켰다면

Verb + -았/었다면:
오다 -- 왔다면 -- 왔으면 -- 왔더라면
가지 않다 -- 가지 않았다면 -- 가지 않았으면 -- 가지 않았더라면
공부하다 -- 공부했다면 -- 공부했으면 -- 공부했더라면

Noun + 였다면 / 이었다면:
부자 -- 부자였다면 
학생 -- 학생이었다면




Examples :

1. 복관 사셨네요. 복권에 당첨되면 뭐 하고 싶어요?
- 복권에 당첨된다면 멋진 자동차를 사고 싶어요.
You bought a lottery ticket. What do you want to do if you win the lottery?
- If I won the lottery,  I would want to buy a fancy car.

2. 두 분이 한국에서 만나셨다면서요?
- 네, 제가 한국에 오지 않았다면 앤디 씨를 만나지 못했을 거예요.
I hear that you met in Korea?
- Yes, if I hadn’t come to Korea, I would not have met Andy.

3. 날씨가 좋았다면 한라산에 갈 수 있었을 텐데.
If the weather had been good, we could have gone to Mt. Hallasan.

4. 이번에도 졸업을 못한다면 부모님이 정말 실말하실 거예요.
If I don't graduate this time, my parents will be really disappointed.

5. 내가 부자라면 가난한 사람들을 도와줄 수 있을 텐데.
If I were rich, I would be able to help the poor.

6. 10개 사신다면 1개 더 무료 드리겠습니다.
If you buy 10, I will give you 1 free.

7. 지금부터 열심히 공부한다면 대학교에 갈 수 있을 거예요.
If you study hard from now, you should be able to enter the university.

8. 오후에 비가 그친다면/ 그치면 운동하러 가요.
If the rain stopped in the afternoon,  I would go for playing sports.

9. 우리가 학생인다면 할인을 받을 수 있을 텐데요.
If we were students, we would have received the discount.

10. 이번에 장학금을 받는다면/받으면 한턱을 낼 거예요.
If I get the scholarship this time, I will treat you (with something).


Differences between A/V/N-(으)면 grammar and A/V/N-(느)ㄴ다면 grammar:

A/V/N-(으)면 is used to refer to events that have a high chance to occur while A/V/N-(느)ㄴ다면 refers to events which have little or no chance to occur.

E.g.
내가 너면 (wrong)/ 너였다면 (correct) 그렇게 행동하지 않을 거야.
If I were you, I wouldn't have done that.
