In a heartwarming act of generosity, Kyung Hee University announced on May 28 that an anonymous donor (in her 90s) living near the campus visited the university’s main building and donated ₩50 million KRW (approximately $36,000 USD) in cash to support underprivileged students.

The elderly donor, who wished to remain unnamed, carefully wrapped bundles of ₩50,000 banknotes in newspaper and handed them to a university staff member.
“I didn’t have the chance to study much myself,” the donor shared, “but I want to help today’s students continue their education, especially those in difficult financial situations.”
She added:
“If I had more time, I would have tried to save more. But because of my age, I’m giving the amount I was able to prepare in advance.”
The elderly benefactor emphasized that she is not an alumnus of Kyung Hee University, nor are her children. The decision to donate was based solely on trust in the institution's integrity.
“I live in Dongdaemun District, and I believe that giving to a reputable and high-standing institution ensures the donation will be used properly,” the donor said, expressing hope that the funds would be used ethically and for genuine student support.
The donor also declined all requests for photographs, recognition ceremonies, or honorary gifts.
Honoring the donor’s wishes, Kyung Hee University confirmed that the ₩50 million will be used exclusively for scholarships for students facing financial hardships.
A university representative stated:
“This is more than just a generous donation — it reflects a sincere desire to expand educational opportunities for the next generation. We will respect the donor’s wishes and ensure the funds are used meaningfully for student support.”
This act stands out in an age where donations are often tied to name recognition or media attention. It reminds us of the power of quiet kindness, and how even without formal education or fame, one person can make a lasting impact on the future of others.
