Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is glowing again this fall as the 2026 Suwon Hwaseong Media Art Show transforms one of Korea’s most iconic historical sites into a spectacular nighttime canvas.
From September 19 to October 6, 2026, visitors can experience large-scale projection mapping, colorful light installations and immersive media art around the historic fortress in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.
It is a striking combination of Joseon-era heritage and modern digital technology, offering visitors a completely different way to experience Suwon Hwaseong after dark.
🌙 A Historic Fortress Becomes a Giant Canvas
The festival's main attraction is centered around Hwaseomun Gate (화서문), where the fortress walls and architecture become part of a large-scale media-art performance.
The projected images, lighting and sound interact with the historic structures, creating a constantly changing nighttime landscape.
The main media-art performances are scheduled for:
- 7:30 PM
- 8:30 PM
- 9:30 PM
Each performance lasts approximately 35 minutes.
🏰 More Than Just One Light Show
The experience extends beyond Hwaseomun.
At Janganmun Gate (장안문), visitors can see additional media art inspired by the history and stories of Suwon Hwaseong. The installations are presented throughout the evening, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to explore the area.
Nearby Jangan Park also features interactive lighting and other media-art experiences, creating a broader festival atmosphere around the fortress.
The combination of illuminated architecture, digital artwork and the surrounding historic streets makes the area particularly atmospheric after sunset.

Suwon Hwaseong is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Korea's best-known examples of late Joseon-era fortress architecture.
During the media-art festival, however, the centuries-old walls take on a completely different appearance.
Instead of simply viewing the fortress as a historical monument, visitors can experience it through light, sound, projection and interactive technology.
