A/V-기는 하지만, -기는 -지만 grammar = but (I think) ~express contrast with emphasis in different view or belief

Usage:
- Express the contrast in the sense that the speaker acknowledges the 1st clause and emphasizes a different view or belief in the 2nd clause = but (I think)

A/V-기는 하지만 uses the A/V once, while A/V-기는 A/V-지만 uses the same A/V twice.

Tense:

Adjective/Verb + -기는 하지만 ; -기는 -지만 (Present tense)

크다 --> 크기는 하지만 --> 크기는 크지만
덥다 --> 덥기는 하지만 --> 덥기는 덥지만
편하다 --> 편하기는 하지만 --> 편하기는 편하지만  
재미있다 --> 재미있기 하지만 --> 재미있기 재미있지만 
다니다 -> 다니기는 하지만 --> 다니기는 다니지만
먹다 --> 먹기 하지만 --> 먹기 먹지만 
좋아하다 --> 좋아하기 하지만 --> 좋아하기는 좋아하지만

Adjective/Verb + -기는 했지만 ; -기는 -았/었지만 (Past tense)

먹다 --> 먹기 했지만 --> 먹기 먹었지만 
다니다 -> 다니기는 지만 --> 다니기는 다니었지만

Adjective/Verb + -기는 하겠지만 ; -기는 -겠지만 (Future tense)

먹다 --> 먹기 하겠지만 --> 먹기 먹지만 
다니다 -> 다니기는 하겠지만 --> 다니기는 다니지만


Specific usage:

1. In conversation, -기는 하지만 and -기는 -지만 were shortened to -긴 하지만 and -긴 -지만. 

춤을 추긴 추지만 잘 추지 못해요.
I can dance, but I can't dance well.

2. The past tense form is -기는 했지만, not -았/었기는 했지만.

수영을 배웠기는 했지만 잘 못해요. (X)
수영을 배우기는 했지만 잘 못해요. (O)
I learned to swim, but I'm not good at it.

3. -기는 하지만 can be replaced by -기는 하는데 without meaning change, however -기는 하지만 emphasizes a higher degree of contrast than -기는하는데

식사를 하기는 했는데 또 배고파요.
I ate, but I am hungry again.


Examples:

1. 넘어져서 다친 다리는 괜찮아요?
- 아프기는 하지만 참을 수 있어요.
Is your hurt leg since you fell ok?
- It's hurt,  but I can bear it.

2. 어제 선생님이 읽으라고 하신 책을 다 읽었겠지요?
읽기는 읽었지만 내용은 잘 모르겠어요.
Have you read the book that the teacher told you to read yesterday?
- I read it but I didn't understand it well.

3. 그 옷은 너무 예쁘기는 하지만 너무 너무 비싸서 못 사겠어요.
Those clothes are very pretty but I can’t buy it since it is very very expensive.

4. 이 음식을 먹긴 하겠지만 많이 먹지 않을 거예요.
I will eat this food but I won't eat much.

5. 어제 본 영화가 재미있기는 했지만 모두 이해하지는 못했어요.
The movie I watched yesterday was interesting but I couldn't understand completely.

6. 요즘 정말 덥지요?
덥기는 덥지만 에어컨이 있으니까 괜찮아요.
It is very hot these days,  right?
- It's hot but it is ok since I have an air conditioner.

7. 유학 조건이 좋기는 좋지만 집에서 멀리 사니까 고독해요.
Study abroad is good but it is lonely because of living far from family.

8. 지금도 그 회사에 다녀요?
- 네, 다니기는 하지만 힘들어요.
Are you still working for that company?
- Yes, I work there but it's hard.

9. 이번 여름은 정말 덥지요?
덥기는 덥지만 괜찮아요. 제 고향은 더 덥거든요.
This summer is really hot, right?
- It's hot but it is ok. In my hometown it is even hotter.

10. 김치찌개는 맵기는 하지만 맛있어요.
Kimchi soup is spicy but (I think) it is delicious.

11. 한국어 공부가 재미있지요?
- 재미있기는 하지만 좀 어려워요.
Studying Korean is fun, isn't it?
- It's fun, but (I think) it's a bit difficult.


Differences between A/V-지만 grammar vs A/V-기는 하지만 grammar

1. A/V-지만 grammar

- The subject of both clauses can be different.

언니는 키가 크지만 동생은 키가 작아요.
My older sister is tall, but my younger brother is short.

- Express a simple contrast (not emphasize).

원룸이 편하지만 좀 시끄러워요.
The room is convenient but a bit noisy.

2. A/V-기는 하지만 grammar

- The subject of both clauses must be the same.

언니는 크기는 크지만 너무 날씬해요.
My sister is tall, but she's too thin.

- Use to emphasize a contrast with emphasis in the different view or belief

원룸이 편하기는 하지만 좀 시끄러워요.
The room is convenient but I think it is a bit noisy.
