A/V-ㄴ/은/는 대신(에) grammar = instead of, compensate for, but ~action is replaced by another

A-ㄴ/은 대신에, V-는 대신에, N 대신에  grammar = instead of, compensate for, but ~action can be replaced or compensated by another

Usage:

- A/V-ㄴ/은/는 대신에 indicates an action can be replaced or compensated by another = instead of, compensate for
- The expression is often shortened to -ㄴ/은/는 대신, in which 에 is omitted. 

Tense:

Adjective + -(ㅇ)ㄴ 대신에 = instead of,but

비싸다 -- 비싼 대신에(expensive but...)
작다 -- 작은 대신에 (small but....)

*길다 -- 긴 대신에 (long but...)
나쁘다 -- 나쁜 대신에 (bad but...)
맛있다 -- 맛있는 대신에 (delicious but...)

Verb + -는 대신에 = instead of, compensate for 

쓰다 -- 쓰는 대신에 (instead if writing)
자다 -- 자는 대신에 (instead of sleeping)
보다 -- 보는 대신에 (instead of watching)
듣다 -- 듣는 대신에 (instead of listening)

*만들다 -- 만드는 대신에 (instead of making)
기다리다 -- 기다리는 대신에 (compensate for waiting)
공부하다 -- 공부하는 대신에 (instead of studying)
준비하다 -- 준비하는 대신에 (instead of preparing)

Noun + 대신에 = instead of N

주스 -- 주스 대신에 (instead of juice)
저 -- 저 대신에 (instead of me)
버스 -- 버스 대신에 (instead of bus)
신용카드 -- 신용카드 대신에 (instead of credit card)

This dress is expensive but pretty.

2. 월급이 적은 대신에 근부 시간이 짧아요.

The salary is low, but the working hours are short.

3. 이 가방은 비싸긴 하지만 비싼 대신에 품질이 좋잖아요.

This bag is expensive, but the quality is good.

4. 제가 늦은 대신 맛있는 음식을 사 드릴게요.

Instead of being late, I'll buy you some delicious food.

5. 이 아파트는 집값이 비싼 대신에 편리한 점이 많아요.

This apartment is expensive, but it has many convenient features.

N + 대신에 = instead of N

1.  커피를 마시면 잠이 안 와요. 커피 대신 녹차를 주시겠어요?

I won’t be able to sleep if I drink coffee. Can I get some green tea instead?

2. 포크 대신에 젓가락를 사용하세요.
Please use chopsticks instead of pork.

3. 밥 대신에 피자를 먹을래요?
Will you have pizza instead of rice?

4. 저 대신에 주문좀 해주시겠어요?
Could you order instead of me?

5. 이번 휴가에는 유명한 관광지 대신에 작고 조용한 온천에 가기로 했어요.

This vacation, I decided to go to a small and quiet hot spring instead of a famous tourist site.

6. 앤디 씨, 점심 때 스테이크 먹을까요?
- 오늘은 돈이 없는데 스테이크 대신에 햄버거를 먹으면 어때요?

Andy, shall we have steak for dinner?
- I am out of money today, so how about we have hamburgers instead of steak?

7. 지갑에 돈이 없어서 현금 대신에 카드를 사용할게요.

I don't have money in my wallet, so I'll use a card instead of cash.

1. 여행을 가는 대신에 집에서 쉴 거예요.

Instead of going on a trip, I will rest at home. 

2. 이 저녁 식사는 각자 내는 대신에 내가 다 낼게요.

I will pay for the whole dinner instead of paying by each of us.

3. 어제는 집에서 요리하는 대신 밖에 나가서 외식을 했어요.

Yesterday I went out for a meal instead of eating at home.

4. 이 옷은 맞는 사이즈가 없어서 바꾸는 대신에 환불했어요.

These clothes do not have my size, so I returned instead of exchanging.

5. 오늘은 너무 피곤해서 음식을 만들어 먹는 대신에 외식하기로 했어요.

Today I was so tired that I decided to eat out instead of cooking.

6. 대학교를 졸업한 후에 취직하는 대신에 진학하려고 해요.

Instead of reading at home on the weekend, I'm thinking of going to the library.

10. 요즘 필요한 것을 직접 사러 가는 대신에 인터넷으로 주문해요.

These days, I order online instead of going to buy what I need.

11. 날씨가 더우니까 안경이 불편하네요.
- 그럼, 안경을 쓰는 대신에 렌즈를 껴 보세요.

It’s uncomfortable wearing glasses because of the heat.
- In that case, try to wear contact lenses instead of glasses.
