Usage:

- 건 건 grammar is the abbreviated form of -거나 -거나 grammar and is used to express the result of choosing either options is the same = whether/if A or B

- 건 건 grammar is interchangeable with -든지 -든지 grammar or -든가 -든가 grammar without major meaning change.

 

Tense:

Present tense

A/V-건 A/V-건 = A/V-든지 A/V-든지 = whether A/V or A/V

있건 없건 = 있든지 없든지 = whether there is or not

멀건 가깝건 = 멀든지 가깝든지 = whether far or near

가건 안 가건 = 가든지 안 가든지 = whether going or not

먹건 말건 = 먹든지 말든지 = whether eating or not

일찍 자건 늦게 자건 = whether sleeping early or sleeping late

Specific usage:

1. The phrase 간에 or 상관없이 (= regardless of) is often followed -건 -건 to clarify its meaning.

월급이 많건 적건 간에 맡은 일은 최선을 다해야지.

Regardless of whether the salary is high or low, you must do your best.

 

비가 오건 눈이 오건 상관없이 내일 행사는 계획대로 진행됩니다.

Regardless of whether it rains or snows, tomorrow's event will proceed as planned.

 

2. 누구, 누가, 언제, 어디서, 무엇, 무슨, 어떻게, 어떤 can be used together with -건 to express the meaning of “whoever, whenever, wherever, whatever and whichever.”

무슨 일을 하건 자기가 좋아하는 것을 하는 중요해요.

Whatever you do, it's important to do what you like.

 

누가 이 일을 맡건 간에 잘해 낼 수 있을 거라 믿습니다.

I believe whoever takes this task can do it well.

 

3. The positive and negative forms of the same verb, -건 안 -건 or -건 못 -건 or -건 말건, are sometimes used to emphasize the contrastive meaning.

제가 먹건 말건 신경 쓰지 마세요.

Don’t care whether I eat or not.

 

그는 나오건 안 나오건 일단 약속 장소에 나가서 기다려 봐.

Whether he comes or not, just go to the meeting place and wait.
