KIIP 1 Lesson 1: -이에요/예요 and -은/는 grammars = 'polite ending' and 'subject marker'

1. -이에요/예요grammar = “polite ending” mostly used in speaking.

- It is mostly used in speaking when talking about the name of a person or thing. (사람, 사물 이름을 말할 때 사용해요.)

- It is attached to the end of nouns, used at the end of a sentence.

 

제이슨이에요?

-네, 제이슨이에요.

Are you Jason?

-Yes, I’m Jason.

 

라흐만이에요?

- 아니요, 잠시드예요.

Are you Rahman?

- No, I’m Jamshid.

 

Tense

~이에요 is for nouns that end in a consonant (받침).

~예요 is for nouns that end in a vowel (x받침).

 

후엔 -> 후엔이에요. (I’m Huen)

제이슨 -> 제이슨이에요. (I’m Jason)

 

마이크 -> 마이크예요. (I’m Mike)

토니 -> 토니예요. (I’m Tony)

 

Examples

1. 이름이 뭐예요?

- 안젤라예요.

직업이 뭐예요?

- 회사원이에요.

어느 나라 사람이에요?

- 필리핀 사람이에요.

What is your name?

-It's Angela.

What is your job?

- I'm an office worker.

Where are you from?

- I'm Filipino.

 

2. 마리아예요. 영국 사람이에요. 학생이에요.

I’m Maria. I'm from England. I'm a student.

 

3. 흐엉이예요. 베트남 사람이에요. 여자예요.

It's Huong. I'm Vietnamese. I’m a girl.

 

4. 선생님이에요. 캐나다 사람이에요. 영어 강사예요.

I'm a teacher. I'm Canadian. I'm an English instructor.

 

2. -은/는 grammar = “subject marker”

- It is used to introduce names, occupations, and so on (이름이나 직업등을 소개할 때 사용해요.)

- It is attached to a noun and used as the subject of a sentence.

- It is also used for introducing a new topic.

 

가: 아녕하세요? 저는 고천이에요.

라: 안녕하세요? 저는 라민이에요. 고천 씨는 주부예요?

가: 네, 저는 주부예요.

A: Hello? I am Gocheon.

B: Hello? My name is Ramin. Are you a housewife?

A: Yes, I am a housewife.

 

Tense

 

~은 is for noun with a consonant (받침).

~는 is for words without a consonant (x받침).

 

직업 -> 직업은 (my job is )

이름 -> 이름은 (my name is)

저 -> 저는 ( I am )

안젤라 -> 안젤라는 (Angela is)

Examples

 

1. 박슬기는 초등악생이에요. 박슬기는 한국 사람이에요.

Seulgi Park is an elementary school student. Seulgi Park is Korean.

 

2. 라민은 학생이에요. 라민은 이집트 사람이에요.

Ramin is a student. Ramin is Egyptian.

 

3. 안젤라는 회사원이에요. 안젤라는 필리핀 사람이에요.

Angela is an office worker. Angela is Filipino.

 

4. 라흐만은 공장 직원이에요. 라흐만은 방글라데시 사람이에요.

Rahman is a factory worker. Rahman is from Bangladesh.

 

5. 제 이름은 제시카예요. 저는 캐나다 사람이에요.

My name is Jessica. I'm Canadian.
