A/V-ㄴ/은/는/ㄹ 듯하다 grammar = appear to, seem like ~more formal than -은/는 것 같다
Usage:
- (1) ㄴ/은/는/ㄹ 듯하다 is used to guess the content of the preceeding statement. = appear to, seem like
아이가 혼자 있는 걸 보니 친구가 없는 듯해요.
Seeing that the child is alone, he doesn't seem to have any friends.
날씨가 흐린 걸 보니까 비가 올 듯해요.
Seeing the cloudy weather, it looks like it will rain.
- (2) ㄴ/은/는 듯하다 is also used to express the speaker's opinion about something
내 생각에는 이따가 비가 올 듯해요.
I think it will rain after a while.
내가 보기에는 집에 아무도 없는 듯해요.
I don't think there's anyone at home.
- (3)ㄴ/은/는 듯하다 can be replaced by -은/는 것 같다 to express the speaker's speculation or opinion about something. However, in formal situations, -ㄴ/은/는 듯하다 is used more often.
저 사람은 한국 사람인 듯해요.
= 저 사람은 한국 사람인 것 같아요.
I think that person is Korean.
그 강아지는 주인을 잃어버린 듯해요.
= 그 강아지는 주인을 잃어버린 것 같아요.
The dog seems to have lost its owner.
신제품 판매는 잘됩니까?
- 별로예요. 시람들이 살듯하다가 다들 그냥 가더라고요. 아직 신제품의 효능에 대한 홍보가 부족한 듯해요.
Are new products selling well?
- It's not good. It looked like people were going to buy, but then they all just left. It seems like there is still not enough publicity about the efficacy of the new product.
- (4) ㄴ/은/는 듯하다 can also be replaced by -ㄴ/은/는 듯싶다 without major meaning change. However, -ㄴ/은/는 듯하다 is used more generally.
뭔가 오해가 있었던 듯해요.
= 뭔가 오해가 있었던 듯싶어요
주말이니까 영화관에 가기 전에 예매를 해야 할 듯해요.
= 주말이니까 영화관에 가기 전에 예매를 해야 할 듯싶어요.
- (5) The shortened form -ㄴ/은/는/ㄹ 듯 is often used in news reports and titles of newpapers or articles.
고속도로 몸살, 저녁까지 정체 이어질 듯. [몸살 = ache, 정체 = congestion]
Highway congestion is expected to continue until evening.
올여름 '과일 대란' 없을 듯 [대란 = crisis]
There seems to be no ‘fruit crisis’ this summer.

Differences between -(으)ㄴ 듯하다, -는 듯했다, and -(으)ㄴ 듯했다 grammars.
While the expressions all indicate situations related to the past, they have the following differences.
1. (으)ㄴ 듯하다: there is guess about what happed in the past based on the present situation.
=> The speaker is guessing that Mina went to sleep late last night.
2. 는 듯했다: there is guess about what was in the process of happening in that monent of the past situation
수업 시간에 보니 민아는 무언가를 먹는 듯했다.
=> The speaker is referring to the past guess that Mina seemed to be eating something at that previous time.
3. (으)ㄴ 듯했다: There is guess about what had already happened prior to a past situation
어제 예기를 들으니 민아는 파티에서 그 남자를 이미 한두 번 만난 듯했다.
=> The speaker is describing a guess yesterday that Mina had met the man before yesterday.
