Historic Flood Strikes Chungnam Province —100-Year Rainfall Triggers Chaos

South Korea’s Chungnam Province is facing a historic flood disaster after a record-breaking downpour turned city streets into rivers, forced hundreds of residents to evacuate, and tragically claimed at least one life on 17th July.

Historic Flood in Chungnam Province

Seosan recorded an astonishing 114.9 mm of rainfall in just one hour — a level meteorologists say happens only once in a century. Overnight totals reached up to 344 mm, overwhelming drainage systems and causing widespread destruction across the province.

🚨 “It Looked Like a River, Not a Road”

In Hongseong, the Galsancheon River overflowed its banks, flooding major roads and low-lying neighborhoods. Emergency services rushed to assist residents in Dangjin, Seocheon, and Buyeo, where hundreds of families were evacuated in the middle of the night.

In one heartbreaking incident, a man in his 50s died after being trapped inside a submerged car in Seosan, highlighting the severity of the flash flooding.

⚠️ More Rain and Danger Ahead

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued flood, landslide, and heavy rain warnings, forecasting an additional 20–60 mm per hour of rainfall, with some areas expected to receive over 180 mm today alone.

  • Flash flood and landslide risks remain extremely high, especially near rivers and hillsides.
  • Road collapses and embankment failures have been reported in multiple locations.

🛑 Transportation Shutdowns and School Closures

The severe weather has brought transportation to a standstill:

  • Daejeon–Dangjin Expressway and Seohaean Expressway have been closed due to major landslides.
  • Train operations on the Gyeongbu, Janghang, and Seohae lines have been suspended to protect passengers.
  • All schools in five cities/counties, including Seosan, Asan, Yesan, and Hongseong, have been shut down as floodwaters made commuting impossible.

As of Thursday morning, at least 124 people had been evacuated to community shelters and school halls.
