Welcome to KIIP Level 4 Unit 6! This lesson focuses on essential vocabulary and grammar patterns for discussing globalization, international relations, and societal changes in the modern world. You'll learn how to describe increased international cooperation, multicultural societies, and the challenges and opportunities of a globalized era.

 

KIIP 4 Unit 6 Globalization Era

This unit introduces two key grammar patterns:

 

1. Verb/Adjective + -던 - Used to describe something past, unfinished, or remembered from memory ("that used to...", "the... that I saw/felt before").

 

2. Verb/Adjective + -을 정도로 - Used to express the degree or extent of something ("to the extent that...", "so much that...").

Grammar Notes & Examples

 

1. Verb/Adjective + -던 ("that used to...", "the... that was")
Used to recall a past, repeated event, action, or state, or to indicate that a past action or state did not continue to the present. It often describes a habitual past action or a past characteristic.

 

Conjugation Rules:

Verb/Adjective stem + -던

·        가다 → 가던

·        먹다 → 먹던

·        놀다 → 놀던

·        크다 → 크던

·        작다 → 작던

·        친절하다 → 친절하던

 

Examples:

1.     요즘 다문화 사회가 되면서 우리처럼 국제 결혼하는 부부가 해마다 늘고 있다고 해요.
(They say as society becomes multicultural, international couples like us are increasing every year.)
→ 네. 전에는 남편이랑 걸어가면 신기하게 쳐다보던 사람들도 이제는 많이 달라졌어요.
(Yes. People who used to stare curiously when my husband and I walked together in the past have also changed a lot now.)

2.     못 보던 가방이네요. 새로 샀어요?
(That's a bag I've never seen. Did you buy it new?)
→ 아니요. 언니가 쓰던 가방이에요.
(No. It's the bag my older sister used to use.)

3.     그 많던 동네 친구가 이제는 다들 먼 곳으로 이사를 해서 만나기가 어려워요.
(Many neighborhood friends I used to have all have moved far away, so it's hard to meet them.)

4.     3년 동안 다니던 회사를 그만두었어요.
(I quit the company I used to work at for 3 years.)

5.     자국에서만 사업을 하던 기업들이 해외로 진출하고 있어요.
(Companies that used to operate only in their home country are now expanding overseas.)

 

2. Verb/Adjective + -을 정도로 ("to the extent that...", "so much that...")
Used to indicate that the following action or state is of a similar degree or level to what is stated in the preceding clause. It emphasizes a high degree that leads to or allows for the subsequent situation.

 

Conjugation Rules:

Verb/Adjective ending in consonant + -을 정도로:

·        먹다 → 먹을 정도로

·        읽다 → 읽을 정도로

·        없다 → 없을 정도로

·        모르다 → 모를 정도로

Verb/Adjective ending in vowel + -ㄹ 정도로:

·        아프다 → 아플 정도로

·        살다 → 살 정도로

 

Examples:

1.     요즘 학교마다 국제 교류가 활발해서 교환 학생 프로그램도 많이 생긴 것 같아요.
(International exchanges are so active at every school these days that it seems many student exchange programs have been created.)
→ 네. 저도 대학교 때 한국에 교환 학생으로 온 적이 있었는데 시간이 얼마나 빨리 지나는지 모를 정도로 즐겁게 지냈어요.
(Yes. I also came to Korea as an exchange student in university, and I had such a good time that I didn't know how fast time was passing.)

2.     어제 늦게 퇴근했어요? 피곤해 보이네요.
(Did you leave work late yesterday? You look tired.)
→ 요즘 일이 많아서 아침에 못 일어날 정도로 피곤해요.
(I have so much work lately that I'm tired to the point of not being able to wake up in the morning.)

3.     동생의 외국어 실력이 어때요?
(How is your younger sibling's foreign language skill?)
→ 국제기구에 지원할 정도로 외국어를 잘해요.
(He is good enough at foreign languages to apply to an international organization.)

4.     이 소설책은 밤을 새워서 읽을 정도로 재미있어요.
(This novel is so interesting that I would stay up all night to read it.)

5.     출퇴근 시간에는 발 디딜 틈이 없을 정도로 지하철에 사람이 많아요.
(During rush hour, the subway is so crowded that there's no room to step.)

(Rahman: Anaïs, what are you looking at so intently?)

아나이스: 해외 파견 근무자 모집에 대한 안내문을 읽고 있었어요.
(Anaïs: I was reading a notice about recruiting overseas dispatched workers.)

라흐만: 아, 그래요?
(Rahman: Oh, really?)

아나이스: 네. 외국에 다양한 분야의 인력을 파견한다고 해서 찾아보는 중이에요.
(Anaïs: Yes. They said they dispatch workers in various fields abroad, so I was looking into it.)

라흐만: 그렇군요. 졸업하고 나서 고향에 안 돌아가고 계속 외국에서 일하려고요?
(Rahman: I see. After graduating, you don't plan to return to your hometown and want to keep working abroad?)

아나이스: 네. 해외 진출 기업에서 일하는 친구들이 있는데 정신없이 바쁘지만 일을 찾아서 할 정도로 재미있대요.
(Anaïs: Yes. I have friends who work at companies that have expanded overseas, and they say it's hectic and busy, but it's so interesting that they look for work to do.)

라흐만: 제 주변에도 외국 기업에 취업하려고 하는 사람들이 많아요. 국제 교류가 활발해지면서 더 이상 다른 문화를 낯설어하지 않는 것 같아요.
(Rahman: There are many people around me who want to get jobs at foreign companies too. As international exchanges become more active, it seems people don't find other cultures unfamiliar anymore.)

아나이스: 맞아요. 저도 다양한 사람들과 함께 어울리면서 더 많이 배우고 생각도 넓히면 좋겠어요.
(Anaïs: That's right. I hope to learn more and broaden my perspective by mingling with diverse people too.)

(1) What You Can Do in the Globalization Era (국제화 시대 할 수 있는 일)

·        세계를 무대로 활동하다: To be active on the global stage.

·        세계 시민 의식을 갖다: To have a sense of global citizenship.

·        국제적 감각을 키우다: To cultivate an international sense/sensibility.

(2) What Must be Equipped in the Globalization Era (국제화 시대에 갖춰야 할 것)

 

Q: 국제화 시대에 갖춰야 할 것들은 뭐가 있을까요?
(Q: What things must we be equipped with in the globalization era?)

 

A: 국제화 시대에 필수적으로 갖춰야 할 것은 당연히 외국어 능력 아닐까요? 직장인 과반수가 “업무 때 사용하지 않지만 외국어 능력이 필요하다."라고 응답한 것처럼 요즘은 외국어를 구사하는 능력이 최우선으로 필요한 것 같아요.
(A: Isn't the essential thing to have in the globalization era obviously foreign language ability? Just as more than half of office workers responded, "It's not used for work, but foreign language ability is necessary," these days, the ability to speak a foreign language seems to be the top priority.)

 

A: 국제화 시대를 살아가기 위해서는 편견과 선입견을 버리고 열린 마음으로 변화와 다름을 받아들여야 하겠죠.
(A: To live in the globalization era, we must discard prejudice and preconceptions and accept change and difference with an open mind, right?)

→ 맞습니다. 유네스코(UNESCO)에서도 세계 각국의 다양성을 인정하자는 협약을 맺었죠. 다문화 사회로 변화하면서 다양한 문화를 존중하기 위한 노력이 세계적으로 이루어지고 있어요.
(That's right. UNESCO also established a convention to recognize the diversity of each country in the world. As we change into a multicultural society, efforts to respect diverse cultures are being made globally.)

→ 열린 마음을 갖기 위해서는 어렸을 때부터 다양한 문화를 경험하고 국제적 감각을 키우는 훈련이 필요하다고 생각해요.
(I think that to have an open mind, training to experience diverse cultures and cultivate an international sense from a young age is necessary.)

→ 요즘은 국제 사회에서 '세계 시민 의식 갖기'를 강조하고 있는데, 이를 위해서는 초, 중, 고등학교에서 다양한 방식으로 세계 시민 교육을 실시해야 합니다.
(These days, 'having a global citizenship consciousness' is being emphasized in the international community, and for this, elementary, middle, and high schools need to implement global citizenship education in various ways.)

 

A: 전 세계를 무대로 활동하려면 국제 사회의 정치, 경제, 문화 등의 배경지식을 갖추는 것이 중요할 것 같아요.
(A: To be active on the global stage, I think it's important to be equipped with background knowledge of the international community's politics, economy, culture, etc.)

 

(3) Are You Ready for Overseas Employment? (해외 취업 당신은 준비가 되었습니까?)

저는 학교에서 배운 중국어를 사용해 보기 위해 처음으로 중국에 갔습니다. 중국은 변화와 성장이 빨라 미래 가능성이 높아 보였습니다. 세계화를 꿈꾸는 많은 기업이 중국에 진출하기 시작했기 때문입니다.
(I first went to China to try using the Chinese I learned in school. China looked to have high future potential because change and growth were fast. That's because many companies dreaming of globalization began to enter China.)

 

하지만 모든 것이 쉽지는 않았습니다. 비자 문제로 귀국해야 할 때도 있었습니다. 그러나 포기하지 않고 다시 도전했습니다. 제가 중국에서 다니는 회사는 독일 기업인데 중국에서 살고 있는 외국인의 다양한 경험을 중요하게 생각했습니다. 중국인들과 비교해 부족한 언어 실력이지만 다양한 경험을 한 외국인이라는 점에서 좋은 점수를 받고 합격하게 되었습니다.
(However, not everything was easy. There were times I had to return to Korea due to visa problems. But I didn't give up and challenged myself again. The company I work for in China is a German company, and they valued the diverse experiences of foreigners living in China. Although my language skills are lacking compared to Chinese people, I got a good score for being a foreigner with diverse experiences and was accepted.)

 

합격을 한 후에는 회사 업무를 잘 수행하기 위해 언어 공부를 꾸준히 하고 있습니다. 일과 공부를 같이 하는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 이것도 제가 발전할 수 있는 기회라고 생각하고 틈을 내서 열심히 하고 있습니다.
(After being accepted, I have been consistently studying the language to perform my company duties well. Working and studying together isn't easy. But I think this is also an opportunity for me to develop, and I'm working hard, making time for it.)

 

사실 중국에서 혼자 생활하며 이해하기 어려운 문화 때문에 고향으로 돌아가고 싶었던 적이 한두 번이 아니었습니다. 귀국까지 생각할 정도로 힘들었던 저는 그 나라의 문화를 받아들이는 자세가 부족했다는 것을 깨닫고 그 문화를 있는 그대로 받아들이기 시작했습니다. 그러자 놀랍게도 그들만이 가진 문화의 장점이 보이기 시작했습니다.
(In fact, living alone in China, there wasn't just one or two times I wanted to return to my hometown because of the difficult-to-understand culture. I, who struggled to the point of even thinking about returning home, realized I lacked an attitude of accepting that country's culture and began to accept the culture as it was. Then, surprisingly, I began to see the unique strengths of their culture.)

 

처음부터 쉬운 것은 없습니다. 저처럼 여러분들도 하나하나 준비하며 나와 다른 그들의 모습도 인정하는 마음을 가지고 도전한다면 성공적인 해외 취업을 할 수 있을 것입니다.
(Nothing is easy from the start. Like me, if you all prepare one by one and take on the challenge with a heart that also accepts appearances different from your own, you will be able to achieve successful overseas employment.)
