V-고 말다 and V-고 말겠다 grammar = (1) end up doing something undesirably, (2) will definitely do 

Usage:

- (1) V-고 말다 is used to express an unplanned action completed in an undesired way. It is also combined with -아/어 버리다 to emphasize speaker’s feeling of regret or sorrow. = 'end up V-ing', 'turn into V-ing'

열심히 공부했지만 이번 시험에 떨어지고 말았어요.

I studied hard but ended up failing this test.

휴대폰을 들고 다니다가 잃어버리고 말았어요.

I was carrying my cell phone and lost it. (regrettably)

- (2) V-고 말다 is often combined with -겠- or -(으)ㄹ 테니까 to refer the speaker’s strong intention or will. Adverbs such as 꼭 and 반드시 are often used too. = will definitely, will surely 

올해는 꼭 담배를 끊고 말겠어요.

I will definitely quit smoking this year.

Tense

Verb + 고 말다 = end up V-ing, turn into V-ing

가다 --> 가고 말다 (end up going)

자다 --> 자고 말다 (turn into sleeping)
먹다 --> 먹고 말다 (end up eating)
지다 --> 지고 말다 (end up losing)
나쁘다 -> 나빠지다 (end up getting bad)
병이 나다 --> 병이 나고 말다 (end up getting sick)
잠을 들다 --> 잠을 들고 말다 (end up getting sleepy)

Verb + 고 말겠다 = will (definitely) do something

보다 -> 보고 말겠다 (will watch a movie)

끝내다 --> 끝내고 말겠다 (will finish homework)

이사하다 --> 이사하고 말겠다 (will move house)

학겨하다 --> 학격하고 말겠다 (will pass exam)

담배를 끊다 --> 담배를 끊고 말겠다 (will quit smoking)

1. 뛰어갔는데도 지각하고 말았어요.

Even though I ran, I ended up getting late. 

2. 서두르다가 넘어지고 말았어.

I was in hurry and felt.

3. 넘어져서 다치고 말았어요.

I fell and got hurt.

4. 우리 축구 팀이 열심히 싸웠지만 상대 팀에게 지고 말았어요.

Our soccer team fought hard but they ended up losing the opponent team.

5. 화재가 나서 그 건물이 불에 타 버리고 말았어요.

The fire occurred, and the building ended up burning to ground. (regrettably)

6. 담배를 많이 피우더니 건강이 나빠지고 말았어요.

I smoked heavily, and now my health ended up getting bad.

7. 계속 무리를 하더니 몸살이 나고 말았어요.

I kept working overloaded and now I ended up getting sick.

8. 구경만 하려고 했는데 이 옷이 예뻐서 사고 말았어요.

I planned to have a look, but I ended up buying these clothes since It’s pretty.

9. 영화가 지루해서 잠이 들고 말았어요.

Since the movie is boring, I ended up getting sleepy.

10. 그렇게 며칠 동안 밤을 세워서 일을 하면 병이 나고 말 거예요.

If you keep staying up all night working for several days, you will end up getting sick.

11. 앤디 씨, 시험 공부 많이 했어요?
- 아니요. 10분만 잔다는 게 그만 아침까지 자고 말았어요.

Andy, did you study much for the exam?
- No, I intended to sleep for 10 min, but I turned into sleeping until the morning.

12. 안나 씨, 이 과자를 다 먹었어요? 다이어트 한다고 하지 않았어요?
- 한 개만 먹으려고 했는데 먹다 보니까 과자를 다 먹고 말았네요.

Anna, did you eat all these cookies? Didn't you say you were on a dirt?
- I was going to eat one, but after having one I ended up eating them all.

*V-고 말겠다 or V-고 말 테니까 grammar = will definitely do something 

1. 오늘 밤까지 이 일을 반드시 끝내고 말겠습니다.

I will definitely to finish this work tonight.

2. 이번 시험을 꼭 합격하고 말 테니까 걱정하지 마세요.

Don’t worry because I will definitely pass the test this time.

3. 내일부터 간식을 안 먹고 말겠어요.

I won't eat snacks from tomorrow.

4. 올해부터 운동을 열심히 하고 말겠어요.

I'll work out hard from this year.

5. 내년에는 꼭 수영을 배우고 말겠어요.

I will definitely learn to swim next year.

6. 오늘 잠을 못 자도 이 드라마를 끝까지 다 보고 말겠어요. 

Even if I can't sleep tonight, I will watch this drama until the end.

7. 방학 동안 이 책들을 다 읽고 말겠어요.

I will read all of these books during my vacation.

8. 아버지를 졸라서 강아지를 키우고 말겠어요.

I will beg my father to raise a puppy.
