Usage:

- Suggest someone or a group of people doing something together = let’s, shall we

- When suggesting someone or a group of people not doing something, V-지 맙시다 or V-지 마요 is used.

- Can't be used toward someone older or having higher status than the speaker, 같이 V-(으)세요 is often used instead. (example 8, 9)

- V-자 is the informal form of V-읍시다. It is only said to friends and younger people. (example 10-12)

Tense:

Verb ending in vowel or ㄹ+  -ㅂ시다 

가다 -- 갑시다 -- 가지 맙시다  -- 가자

만나다 -- 만납시다 -- 만나지 맙시다 -- 만나자 

여행하다 -- 여행합시다 -- 여행하지 맙시다  -- 여행하자 

*만들다 -- 만듭시다 -- 만들지 맙시다  -- 만들자

*놀다 -- 놉시다 -- 놀지 맙시다 -- 놀자

Verb ending in consonant + -읍시다:

먹다 -- 먹읍시다 -- 먹지 맙시다 -- 먹자 

읽다 -- 읽읍시다 -- 읽지 맙시다  -- 읽자 

*듣다 --들읍시다 -- 듣지 맙시다 -- 듣자

*걷다 -- 걸읍시다 -- 걷지 맙시다 -- 걷자

Examples

1. 점심시간입니다. 점심 식사합시다

It’s lunch time. Let's have lunch.

2. 버스를 타지 마요. 지하철을 탑시다.

Let's not take the bus. Let's take the subway.

3. 이 영화는 심심하니까 보지 맙시다.

This movie is boring so let's not see it.

4. 언제 출발할까요?

- 10분 후에 출발합시다.

When shall we depart?

- Let's depart after 10 minutes.

5. 주말에 같이 등산 갑시다.

- 네, 좋습니다.

Shall we go hiking this weekend?

- Ok, sound good.

6. 시간이 없으니까 빨리 갑시다.

Since we don't have time, so let's go quickly.

7. 여러분, 우리 공부 열심히 합시다.

Everyone, let's study hard.

8. 교수님, 저희와 같이 점심 먹읍시다 (wrong) / 교수님, 저희와 같이 점심 드세요. (correct)

Professor, please have lunch together with us.

9. 선생님, 노래방에 같이 갑시다 (wrong) / 선생님, 노래방에 같이 가세요 (correct).

Teacher, please go to karaoke room with us.

10. 다음에 이야기 하자.

Let's talk next time.

11. 5분 후에 출발하자.

Let's depart after 5 minutes.

12. 지금 회의를 시작하자.

Let's start the meeting now.
