A-(으)ㄴ데요, V-는데요 grammar = (1) well, (2) why/what, (3) wow, (4) set background information

Usage:

In general, A/V-(으)ㄴ/는데요 gives a sentence the feeling of disagreement, expectation, or surprise. It is also used to set background information for natural conversation.

(1) Express disagreement or opposition to what a person just said = well (in my case)

오늘 날씨가 별로 안 추워요. (It's not much cold today)
- 그래요. 저는 추운데요. (Well, I feel cold.)

(2) Express expectation or response from someone in conversation = why asking? what is the reason?

여보세요. 거기 수지 씨 댁이지요? (Hello, is this Suzy's home?
- 네, 맞는데요. (Yes, it is. / What is the reason of your call?)

(3) Express speaker's surprise at discovering something unexpected when observing a situation = wow!, I'm surprised that... = A/V-네요 grammar

여자 친구가 정말 예쁜데요. = 여자 친구가 정말 예쁘네요. 
Your girlfriend is really pretty! (Said when observing someone's girlfriend)

(4) Set background information for natural conversation.

제가 좋은 식당을 아는데요. 같이 갈래요?
I know a good restaurant. How about going together?


Tense:

Adjective + ㄴ/은데요.

바쁘다 --> 바쁜데요.
많다 --> 많은데요.
*힘들다 --> 힘든데요.
*덥다 --> 더운데요.

Verb + 는데요 (present tense) / 
-았/었다 +는데요 (past tense)

보다 --> 보는데요.
먹다 --> 먹는데요.
*만들다 --> 만드는데요.
*살다 --> 사는데요
사다 --> 샀는데요.
받다 --> 받았는데요.
교수 --> 교수이었는데요.
친절하다 --> 친절했는데요.
*있다 --> 있는데요.
*없다 --> 없는데요.

Noun + 인데요.

의사 --> 의사인데요.
학생 --> 학생인데요.


Examples

1. 한국 사람이에요?
- 아이요. 한국 사람 아닌데요. (1)
Are you a Korean?
- No, I am not a Korean.

2. 토니 씨, 돈 좀 빌려 주세요. 
- 죄송해요. 지금 돈이 없는데요. (1)
Tony, please lend me some money.
- Sorry. I don't have money now.

3. 같이 저녁 먹을까요? 
- 저는 벌써 먹었는데요. (1)
Shall we have dinner together?
- I've already had dinner.

4. 내일 시간 있어요?
- 네, 내일 시간 있는데요. (2)
Do you have time tomorrow?
- Yes, I have. /Why?

5. 내일 저녁에 시간 있어요?
- 내일은 약속이 있는데요. (2)
Do you have time tomorrow evening?
- Well, I have an appointment tomorrow./ Why?

6. 안나 씨, 한국말을 아주 잘하는데요. (3)
- 아니요. 한국어 초급만 공부하고 있어요.
Anna, you speak Korean so well.
- No, I am just studying elementary Korean.

7. 이 그림 어때요?
- 와, 멋있는데요. (3)
What do you think about this painting?
- Wow, it's really nice.

7. 음식이 진짜 맛있는데요. = 음식이 진짜 맛있네요. (3)
Wow, the foods is so tasty.

8. 저 선수 좀 보세요. (3)
- 와, 정말 대단한데요.
Look at that player.
- Wow, he is really awesome.

9. 방이 많이 더러운데요. 청소 좀 하세요. (4)
The room is so dirty. Please do cleaning.
