V-() 바에야/ grammar = I would rather do that than this ~express the latter action is better

 

Usage:

- Express that the later choice is the better, although neither of two choices in both choices is satisfactory = I would rather do that than do this 

- V-() 바에야/ is often followed by 차라리, 그냥, and 아예 (i.e., -() 바에야 차라리, -() 바에야 그냥, and -() 바에야 아예) to emphasize the meaning

- V-() 바에야/ can be used interchangeably with V-느니 with no major change in meaning.

 

Tense:

 

V+ -() 바에야/ = I would rather do this than do that

가다 -> 바에야/ (차라리) = I would rather … than go

일하다 -> 일할 바에야/ (차라리) = I would rather ... than work

낭비하다 -> 낭비할 바에야/ (차라리) = I would rather … than waste

결혼하다 -> 결혼할 바에야/ (차라리) = I would rather ... than get married

걸어가다 -> 걸어갈 바에야/ (차라리) = I would rather … than walk

싸우다 -> 싸울 바에야/ = I would rather … than fight

 

Examples:

 

1. 적성에 맞지 않는 일을 하면서 마음고생을 바에야 차라리 몸이 힘든 일을 하는 낫겠어요.

I would rather do a physically stressful job than suffer mentally while doing work that is not suited to my aptitude.

 

2. 뭐든지 꾸준히 해야지. 중간에 하다가 그만둘 바에야 아예 처음부터 하는 나아.

Whatever the task is, you must be consistent. It’s better not to do it from the beginning than to quit in the middle.

 

3. 채소를 비싸게 먹을 바에야 번거로워도 직접 집에서 길러 먹어야겠어요.

Although it is troublesome, I would rather grow vegetables at home than buy vegetables expensively to eat.

 

4. 식은 라면을 먹을 바에야 그냥 먹을게요.

I would rather not eat cold ramen.

 

5. 나중에 후회할 바에는 그냥 하는 낫겠다.

I would rather not do it than regret it later.

 

6. 사람이랑 결혼할 바에야 평생 혼자 사는 낫다.

I would rather live alone for the whole life than marry that person.

 

7. 학교 식당에서 먹을 바에야 차라리 굶겠다.

I would rather starve than eat at the school cafeteria.

 

8. 항복할 바에야 차라리 죽겠다.

I would rather die than surrender.

 

9. 나는 도둑질을 바에야 차라리 굶어 죽겠다.

I would rather starve to death than steal.

 

10. 택시를 바에는 차라리 걸어가는 낫겠다.

I would rather walk than take a taxi.
