N-치고 grammar = (1) about, (2) compared to ~express a characteristic of the noun or an exception to the general rules.

 

Usage:

N-치고 has 2 different usages with opposite meanings.

- (1) Indicate that the preceding noun is a characteristic representing the general characteristics of that noun. This grammar is often supported by a double negative structure to emphasize the preceding noun = (talking) about …

- (2) Indicate that the preceding noun is an exception to the general characteristics of that noun = compared to…, except for …

 

Ngữ pháp N-치고 có 2 cách dùng với ý nghĩa trái ngược nhau hoàn toàn:

- (1) Dùng khi danh từ đứng trước mang tính đại diện cho các đặc tính chung của danh từ đó. = đã là ... thì...

- (2) Dùng khi danh từ đứng trước là một ngoại lệ so với các đặc tính chung của danh từ đó. = so với (ai)... thì, ngoài việc (gì) ... thì

 

Tense:

 Noun + 치고 = (1) about…, (2) compared to…, except for …

학생 --> 학생치고

방학 --> 방학치고

휴가 --> 휴가치고

제주도 --> 제주도치고

어린이 --> 어린이치고

 

Examples:

 

* Noun + 치고 = (talking) about… ~express a characteristic of the noun

 

1. 성공한 사람들은 모두 부지런하다.

-> 성공한 사람치고 부지런하지 않은 사람이 없다.

(Talking about successful people) There is no successful person who is not diligent.

 

2. 직장인들은 모두 휴일을 좋아한다.

-> 직장인치고 휴일을 좋아하지 않는 사람이 없다.

(Talking about office workers) There is no office worker who does not like holidays.

 

3. 부모님들은 모두 자식 걱정을 한다.

-> 부모님치고 자식 걱정을 하지 않는 사람이 없다.

(Talking about parents) There is no parent who doesn't worry about their children.

 

4. 어린아이치고 과자를 안 좋아하는 아이를 못 봤다.

I haven't seen a child who doesn't like sweets.

 

5. 그 감독의 작품치고 재미없는 것이 없다.

There is nothing boring about the director's work.

 

6. 내 친구치고 축구를 좋아하지 않는 사람이 없다.

There is no friend of mine who does not like soccer.

 

7. 어린아이치고 만화 영화를 좋아하지 않는 아이들이 없다.

There isn't a kid who doesn't like cartoon movies.

 

8. 한국 사람치고 그 노래를 모르는 사람이 없다.

There isn’t a Korean who does not know that song.

 

9. 요즘 사람치고 휴대 전화로 사진을 찍지 않는 사람이 없다.

There is no one these days who doesn't take pictures with a cell phone.

 

10. 한국 사람들은 매일 김치를 먹는다면서요?

- 네. 한국 사람치고 김치를 싫어하는 사람이 없다라고요.

I heard that Koreans eat kimchi every day, right?

- Yes. There is no Korean who doesn't like kimchi.

 

11. 우리 아이가 게임을 너무 좋아해서 걱정이에요.

- 아이치고 게임을 안 좋아하는 아이가 없잖아요

I'm worried because my child likes games so much.

- There isn't a child who doesn't like games.

 

12. 얼마 전에 싸게 산 이어폰인데 벌써 고장이 났어요.

- 값이 싼 물건치고 오래 쓸 수 있는 게 없는 것 같아요.

I bought cheap earphones a while ago, but it’s already broken.

- I think there is no cheap thing that can be used for a long time.

 

13. 농구 선수들이라서 다들 키가 크네요.

- 농구 선수치고 키가 작은 사람을 못 봤어요.

Because they are basketball players, they are all tall.

- Talking about basketball players, I haven't seen anyone short.

 

* Noun + 치고 = compared to…,except for… ~ express an exception to the general rules.

 

1. 여름 날씨치고 덥지 않다.

Compared to the summer weather, this weather is not hot.

 

2. 떡볶이치고 맵자 않다.

Compared to the tteokpokki, this tteokpokki is not scipy

 

3. 농구 선수치고 키가 크기 않다.

Compared to the basketball players, I am not tall.

 

4. 작은 호텔치고 숙박비가 비싸다. (숙박비 = room change, accommodation fee)

Compared to the small hotels, this room charge is expensive.

 

5. 어린아이가 그린 그림치고 잘 그렸다.

Compared to the pictures drawn by kids, this picture is well drawn.

 

6. 요리를 처음 해 본 것치고 잘한 편이다.

Considering my first-time cooking, it is pretty good.

 

7. 여름 장마철치고 올해는 비가 많이 안 왔네요.

Compared to the summer rainy seasons, this year it doesn’t rain much.

 

8. 리사 씨는 모델치고 키가 크지 않은 편이에요.

Compared to models, Lisa isn’t that tall.

 

9. 한국어를 잘 모르는 것치고 생활하는 데는 불편함이 없습니다.

Except for not knowing Korean well, I don’t have difficulty in living.

 

10. 동생이 초등학생이라고 했지요? 키가 꽤 크네요.

- 제 동생이 초등학생치고는 키가 큰 편이에요.

Did you say your brother is in elementary school? He is quite tall.

- Compared to elementary school students, my younger brother is rather tall.

 

11. 올해 여름은 별로 안 더웠어요.

- 맞아요. 올해 여름은 여름치고는 안 더운 편이었어요.

This summer was not very hot.

- That's right. Compared to the summer weather, this year summer wasn’t that hot.

 

12. 이거 제 첫 작품인데 괜찮지요?

- 네, 첫 작품치고 괜찮은 편이네요.

This is my first work, is it okay?

There weren't many people on the subway today, right?

- Yes. Compared to the after-work hours, there weren't such many people.
