Usage

- V-ㄴ/은 다음에 = ㄴ/은 (relative clause ending) + 다음 (next) + 에 (time particle)

- The grammar is used to express that after the first action finishes, the second action occurs = after doing, after (something) happens

- V-ㄴ/은 다음에 can be used interchangeably with V-ㄴ/은 후에 grammar without meaning change

Tense

오다 -> 온 다음에 / 온 후에 (after coming)

먹다 -> 먹은 다음에 / 먹은 후에 (after eating)

씻다 -> 씻은 다음에 / 씻은 후에 (after washing)

*살다 -> 산 다음에 / 산 후에 (after living)

*듣다 -> 들은 다음에 / 들은 후에 (after hearing)

Specific usage:

1. V-ㄴ/은 다음에 is often shortened to V-ㄴ/은 다음 without meaning change.

조개를 씻은 다음(에) 물에 넣고 끓이세요.

After washing the clams, put them in water and boil them.

2. The verb preceding ㄴ/은 다음에 is always in present tense, and the tense is only shown in the end of the sentence.

점심을 먹은 다음에 낮잠을 자요.

After having lunch, I take a nap.

점심을 먹은 다음에 낮잠을 잤어요.

After having lunch, I took a nap.

점심을 먹은 다음에 낮잠을 잘 거예요.

After having lunch, I will take a nap.

3. A common phrase 그 다음에 (= after that) is also often used in conversation.

어제 쇼핑을 했어요.

- 그 다음에 뭐 했어요?

I went shopping yesterday.

- What did you do after that?
