A/V-ㄴ/은/는 건가(요)? grammar = are/was you...? ~used to politely or gently ask a question

 

A/V-ㄴ/은/는 건가요? V-(으)ㄹ 건가요? grammar = are/was you...? will you...? ~used to politely or gently ask a question

Usage:

- A/V-ㄴ/은/는 건가(요)? is the shortened form of -ㄴ/은/는 것인가(요)? 

- A/V-ㄴ/은/는 건가요? is a variation of the A-(으)ㄴ가요? V-나요? grammar used to politely or gently ask a question = is it...? are you ...?

- A/V-ㄴ/은/는 건가? is the casual form of A/V-ㄴ/은/는 건가요? used to ask a question casually or make a (self-)assumption about a situation. = is he/she/it...?

- V-ㄹ/을 건가요? is used to politely ask someone about his/her plan or schedule = will you...? are you going to...?

Tense:

Adjective + ㄴ/은 건가(요)?

아프다 -> 아픈 건가 -> 아픈 건가요?

건강하다 -> 건강한 건가 -> 건강한 건가요?

가능하다 -> 가능한 건가 -> 가능한 건가요?

행복하다 -> 행복한 건가 -> 행복한 건가요?

Verb +  -는 건가(요)? (Present tense) 

가다 -> 가는 건가 -> 가는 건가요?

사다 -> 사는 건가 -> 사는 건가요?

있다 -> 있는 건가 -> 있는 건가요?

생기다 -> 생기는 건가 -> 생기는 건가요?

Verb + -ㄴ/은 건가(요)? (Past tense)  

가다  -> 간 건가 -> 간 건가요?

먹다 -> 먹은 건가 -> 먹은 건가요?

제한하다 -> 제한한 건가 -> 제한한 건가요?

이해하다 -> 이해한 건가 -> 이해한 건가요?

Verb + -ㄹ/을 건가(요)? (future tense)

가다 -> 갈 건가요?

먹다 -> 먹을 건가요?

있다 -> 있을 건가요?

1. 그녀가 여기서 일하는 건가? 

Does she work here? (make self-assumption)

2. 둘이 싸우는 건가?

Are they fighting? (they seem awkward with each other)

3. 그녀가 살이 찐가?

Has she gained some weights? (it looks like that but I am not sure)

4. 작녁 그 소란 때문에 사람이 안 오는 건가?

Is it because of the commotion last year that people aren't coming?

*V + ㄹ/을 건가요? = will you..? are you going to...? ~used to ask about plan or schedule
