Grammar Notes & Examples

1. Verb + 기 위해서 ("In order to...")

Used to express the purpose or intention behind an action.

Conjugation Rules:

• 배우다 → 배우기 위해서
• 읽다 → 읽기 위해서
• 합격하다 → 합격하기 위해서
• 살다 → 살기 위해서

Examples:

1.     한국 회사에 취직하기 위해서 뭘 준비하고 있어요?
(What are you preparing in order to get a job at a Korean company?)
→ 저는 컴퓨터를 배우고 있어요.
(I’m learning computers.)

2.     쓰레기를 줄이기 위해 어떤 노력을 해야 합니까?
(What efforts should we make to reduce waste?)
→ 우선 일회용품의 사용을 줄여야 할 것입니다.
(First, we should reduce the use of disposable items.)

3.     요즘 어떤 일을 준비하고 있어요?
(What are you preparing for these days?)
→ 토픽 시험에 합격하기 위해 열심히 공부하고 있어요.
(I’m studying hard to pass the TOPIK exam.)

4.     한국 국적을 취득하기 위해 1년 전부터 한국어 공부를 하고 있다.
(I’ve been studying Korean for a year in order to obtain Korean citizenship.)

5.     일하는 엄마들은 아이 맡길 곳을 찾기 위해 노력하고 있다.
(Working mothers are trying hard to find a place to leave their children.)

2. Verb + -어 놓다 ("Do something in advance")

Used to indicate that an action has been completed in preparation for future use.

Conjugation Rules:

• 사다 → 사 놓다
• 찾다 → 찾아 놓다
• 쓰다 → 써 놓다
• 만들다 → 만들어 놓다
• 준비하다 → 준비해 놓다
• 연락하다 → 연락해 놓다

Examples:

1.     휴가철인데 비행기 표가 있을까요?
(It’s vacation season—do you think there are plane tickets?)
→ 걱정 말아요. 미리 예약해 놓았어요.
(Don’t worry. I booked them in advance.)

2.     그 회사에 지원하려고 하는데 뭘 준비해야 돼요?
(I want to apply to that company—what should I prepare?)
→ 이력서나 지원서가 필요해요. 미리 이력서를 써 놓는 것이 좋을 거예요.
(You’ll need a resume or application. It’s best to write your resume in advance.)

3.     토요일 아이 생일인데 선물은 준비했어요?
(It’s my child’s birthday on Saturday—did you prepare a gift?)
→ 네, 선물을 준비해 놓았어요.
(Yes, I’ve already prepared the gift.)

4.     오늘 친구들과 등산을 가기로 했다. 그래서 아침 일찍 샌드위치를 만들어 놓았다.
(I decided to go hiking with friends today, so I made sandwiches early in the morning.)

5.     숙제를 미리 해 놓아서 마음이 편하다.
(I did my homework in advance, so I feel at ease.)
