L1.33 V-(으)면 안 되다 grammar = may not, not allowed ~express prohibition or limitation of an action.

Usage:
- Express prohibition or limitation of a particular action, which represents social conventions or common sense = may not, to be not allowed.
- Double negative form -지 않으면 안 되다 can be used to emphasize that a particular action must be performed.

Words ending in vowel or ㄹ + -면 안 되다:
가다 -- 가면 안 되다
보다 -- 보면 안 되다
운동하다 -- 운동하면 안 되다
쓰다 -- 쓰면 안 되다

Words ending in consonant + -으면 안 되다:
앉다 -- 앉으면 안 되다
받다 -- 받으면 안 되다
*듣다 -- 들으면 안 되다
*붓다 -- 부으면 안 되다

Examples:

1. 실내에서 담배를 피우면 안 돼요.
Smoking indoors is not allowed.

2. 운전 중에 전화하면 안 돼요.
Using phone while driving is not allowed.

3. 벽에 낙서를 쓰면 안 돼요.
Drawing doodle on the wall is not allowed.

4. 한국어 수업 시간에는 영어로 말하면 안 돼요. 한국말을 하세요.
During Korean class, you may not speak in English. Please speak in Korean.

5. 도서관에서 얘기하면 안 돼요.
Chatting in library is not allowed.

6. 여기에 쓰레기를 버리면 안 돼요.
You may not throw trash here.

7. 병이 심각해서 수술하지 않으면 안 돼요.(=수술해야 돼요.)
Since the illness is serious, surgery must be performed.

8. 다음 주에 중요한 시험이 있어서 공부하지 않으면 안 돼요.(=공부해야 돼요.)
Because I have an important exam next week, I must study.

9. 여기에 주차하시면 안 됩니다.
You may not park our car here.
