 A/V-건만 grammar = despite, but ~express that the actual result is different from the expectation

 

Usage:

- A/V-건만 is the shortened form of A/V-건마는 used to express that the actual result is different from the expectation = despite, but

- A/V-건만 is similar to the A/V-지만 for beginner level and A/V-(으)ㄹ 텐데 for intermediate level. However, A/V-건만 is often used to express some sort of regret or feeling of dissatisfaction.

 

Tense:

Adjectives/Verbs

Present: A/V + 건만 or  A/V + 건마는

좋다 -> 좋건만 or 좋건마는

따뜻하다 -> 따뜻하건만 or 따뜻하건마는

가다 -> 가건만 or 가건마는

먹다 -> 먹건만 or 먹건마는

 

Past: A/V + 았/었건만  or  A/V + 았/었건마는

예쁘다 -> 예뻤건만 or 예뻤건마는

덥다 -> 더웠건만 or 더웠건마는

가다 -> 갔건만 or 갔건마는

먹다 -> 먹었건만 or 먹었건마는

 

Future: A/V + 겠건만 or A/V + 겠건마는

가다 -> 가갔건만

먹다 -> 먹겠건만

충분하다 -> 충분하겠건만

건강하다 -> 건강하겠건만

 

Nouns

Present: N + (이)건만 or N + (이)건마는

사람 -> 사람이건만

곳 -> 곳이건만

 

Past: N + 였/이었건만 or  N + 였/이었건마는

시간 -> 시간이었건만

무료 -> 무료였건만

1. 햇살은 따뜻하건만 밖은 여전히 추워요.

Despite the warm sunlight, it’s still cold outside.

 

2. 화가 나건만 그냥 참았어요.

Despite being angry, I just endured.

 

3. 운동을 열심히 하건만 살은 빠지지 않는다.

Despite working out hard, I am not losing weight.

 

4. 그 음식이 맛있건만 많이 먹으면 위장에 좋지 않아요.

The food is delicious, but eating too much is not good for your stomach.

 

5. 연습을 많이 하건만 발음이 좋아하지 않았어요.

I practiced a lot, but I didn't like my pronunciation.

 

6. 그는 열심히 일했건만 성과가 별로 없네요.

10. 많은 국민들이 반대했건만 대통령은 끝까지 그 일을 진행시켰다.

Many people opposed it, but the president pushed it through to the end.

 

11. 내일 날씨가 좋으면 좋겠건만 비가 올 것 같아요.

I hope the weather will be nice tomorrow, but I think it will rain.

 

12. 그는 냉정한 보이건만 사실 너무 친절해요.

He looks sober, but he's actually very kind.
