 A/V-고도 grammar = even after, and yet ~express that an unexpected action occurs after the completion of action in the 1st clause

 

Usage:

- V-고도 is the shortened form of V-고 + 아/어도 used to express an unexpected action or situation occurs after the completion of action in the preceding clause = even after, even though

- A-고도 is the shorted form of A-V + 아/어도 used to express that something has two opposite characteristics = and yet, but

 

Tense:

 

Verb + 고도 = even after, even though

가다 -> 가고도

깨다 -> 깨고도

먹다 -> 먹고도

만들다 -> 만들고도

공부하다 -> 공부하고도

운동하다 -> 운돟하고도

 

Adjective + 고도 = and yet, but

가깝고도 먼 나라 ( A near and yet far country)

넓고도 좁은 세장 (A wide but small world)

길고도 짧은 인생 (A long but short life)

아릅답고도 슬픈 이야기 (A beautiful but sad story)

 

 

Specific usage:

 

1. The subjects of both clauses must be the same

동생이 도자기를 깨고도 제가 깨다고 했어요. (X)

-> 동생이 도자기를 깨고도 깨지 않았다고 했어요. (O)

Even after my brother broke the pottery, he said he didn’t break it.

 

-> 동생이 도자기를 깼지만 제가 깼다고 했어요. (O)

Even though my brother broke the pottery, I said I broke it

 

2. The verb preceding 고도 always ends in present tense

그 친구는 늦게 왔고다 사과하지 않았다. (X)

-> 그 친구는 늦게 오고도 사과하지 않았다. (O)

Even though he came late, he didn't apologize.

 

Examples:

 

1. 이 이야기는 아름답고도 슬픈 이야기입니다.

This story is a beautiful and yet sad story.

 

2. 그는 냉철하고도 너무 친절한 사람이다.

He is a cold but very kind person.

 

3. 지나온 역사를 살펴볼 때 그 나라는 가깝고도 먼 나라이다.

When looking at the past history, that country is a close but distant country.

 

4. 그는 똑똑하고도 진짜 게으른 사람이다.

He is a smart but very lazy person.

 

5. 그는 잘못하고도 사과하지 않았다.

Even after he made a mistake, he didn’t apologize.

 

6. 그 사람과 헤어지고도 눈물을 안 흘렸어요.

Even after breaking up with him, I didn’t cry.

 

7. 시력이 너무 안 좋아서 안경을 끼고도 잘 보이지 않아요.

My eyesight is so bad that, even after wearing glasses, I can't see well.

 

8. 연습을 많이 하면 눈을 감고도 피아노를 칠 수 있다고 해요.

It is said that if you practice a lot, you can play the piano even after closing your eyes.

 

9. 친구는 술을 많이 마시고도 얼굴색 별로 변하지 않아요.

Even after drinking a lot, my friend’s face color doesn’t change at all.

 

10. 결혼하고도 일을 계속하고 싶어요.

Even after getting married, I want to continue working

 

11. 그렇게 밥을 많이 먹고도 과자를 또 먹어요?

Even after eating so much, are you still eating snacks again?

 

12. 요즘은 대학을 졸업하고도 일자리를 구하지 못하는 경우가 많다.

These days, many people are unable to find a job even after graduating from college.

 

13. 엄마, 한 시간만 더 게임하면 안 돼요?

- 아빠한테 그렇게 화나고도 아직 정신을 못 차리니?

Mom, can we play the game for one more hour?

- Even after getting mad at your dad, haven't you come to your senses?

 

14. 성적증명서 필요해서 이번 주에 학교에 한번 가려고 해요.

- 직접 가지 않고도 인터넷으로 신청할 수 있어요.
