N-(이)란 grammar = 'to be' ~a topic marker used to emphasize the preceding noun as the subject of the story 

Usage:

- N-(이)란 is a topic marker used to emphasize that the preceding noun as the subject of the story = 'to be'

- N-(이)란 is the shortened form of N-(이)라는 것은. It is similar to N-은/는 and can be replaced by N-은/는 without much meaning change.

Tense:

N + (이)란 = to be

친구 -> 친구란

휴가 -> 휴가란

방학 -> 방학이란

학생 -> 학생이란

민박집 -> 민박집이란
