-다고 하다 grammar = said, heard ~citing one's statement indirectly


Indirect quotations in Korean 다고/라고/자도/냐고 하다 = said, asked, told ~citing of what someone said or commanded or requested.

1. Declarative sentence: -다고 하다 = said, heard ~citing one's statement indirectly

Usage: 
- 다고 하다 is used to quote one' statement indirectly = (I/he/she) said, heard ...

Present tense:

Vst + 는/ㄴ다고 하다 = said ... 
가다 --> 간다고 하다
먹다 --> 먹는다고 하다
만나다 --> 만난다고 하다
*놀다 -> 논다고 하다
*만들다 --> 만든다고 하다

A + 다고하다 = said ...
바쁘다 --> 바쁘다고 하다
덥다 --> 덥다고 하다
유명하다 --> 유명하다고 하다

N + (이)라고 하다 = said ...
의사 --> 의사라고 하다
학생 --> 학생이라고 하다

Past tense:

V/A + 았/었/였다고 하다 = said ...
가다 --> 갔다고 하다
먹다 --> 먹었다고 하다
*춥다 --> 추웠다고 하다

Future tense:

V/A + -(으)ㄹ 거라고 하다 = said ...
만나다 --> 만날 거라고 하다
먹다 --> 먹을 거라고 하다
*춥다 --> 추울 거라고 하다


Examples:

*Vst + 는/ㄴ다고 하다 (present tense)

1. 우리 회사에서 경력 사원을 모집한다고 했어요.
I heard that our company is hiring experienced employees.

2. 여름에 사람들은 바다로 간다고 들었어요.
It is said that people go to the beach in summer.

3. 수지 씨가 내일 온다고 해요. (수지: 내일 올게요.) 
Suzy says she will come tomorrow.

4. 후안 씨가 수업이 끝나고 명동에 간다고 했어요. (후안: 수업이 끝나고 명동에 갈 거예요.)
Juan said he was going to Myeong-dong after class.

5. 요즘 지훈 씨가 안 보이네요.
- 지훈 씨는 방학 동안 할머니 댁에서 지낸 다고 했어요.
I can't see Jihoon these days.
-Jihoon said he was staying at his grandmother's house during his vacation.


*A + 다고하다 (present tense)

1. 민우 씨가 저에게 정말 아름답다고 했어요. 
Minu said that I am really beautiful.

2. 이 드라마가 너무 유명하다고 했어요.
I heard that this drama is very famous.


*N + (이)라고 하다 (present tense)

1. 베트남에서 축구가 가장 인기 스포츠(이)라고 했어요.
I heard that soccer is the most popular sport in Vietnam.

2. 그의 남편은 의사(이)라고 했어요.
I heard that her husband is a doctor.

3. 올해는 빨간 색이 유행이라고 해요.
It is said that red is in fashion this year.


*V/A + 았/었/였다고 하다 (past tense)

1. 토니는 5 살 때 키가 작았다고 했어요.
Tony said that he was short when he was 5 years old.

2. 어제 모임에 온 사람이 많았다고 했어요.
I heard that there were many people attending the yesterday gathering.

3. 지갑을 잃어버렸다고 들었는데, 찾았어요?
I heard that you lost your wallet. Did you find it?

4. 선생님은 학생들이 늦게 도착했다고 말했다.
The teacher said that the students arrived late.


*V/A + -(으)ㄹ 거라고 하다 (future tense)

1. 다음 달에 이사할 거라고요?
I heard that you will move next month?

2. 그 분이 이번 여름에 한국에 갈 거라고 했어요.
I heard that he will go to Korea this summer.

3. 내년부터 한국어능력시험이 더 어려울 거라고 했어요.
I heard that the TOPIK exam will be more difficult from next year.

4. 수진 씨는 다음 달에 결혼할 거라고 했어요.
Sujin said she will get married next month.
