V-아/어 주다/주시다/드리다 grammar = help, assist ~do something beneficial for me or someone

Usage: 

- V-아/어 주다 is used when YOU (Someone) do something beneficial for someone (You).

- V-아/어 주시다 and V-아/어 드리다 are the polite forms of V-아/어 주다 used to signify respect and politeness.

- V-아/어 주시다 is used when an upper person (parents, teacher, elder, boss, customer, etc.) is doing something beneficial for you.

- V-아/어 드리다 is used when YOU do something beneficial for an upper person. 

나 / 친구 -- 아/어 드리다 --> 웃어른 (upper person)

웃어른    -- 아/어 주시다 --> 나 / 친구 

나 / 친구 -- 아/어 주다  --> 친구/ 나

- When you make a request to someone, V-아/어 주세요 or V-아/어 주시겠어요? is used.

V-아/어 주세요, V-아/어 주시겠어요? grammar = please do, would you please ~making a request to someone

- When you express an attempt to assist someone, V-아/어 줄게요 or V-아/어 줄까요? is used.

V-아/어 줄게요, V-아/어 줄까요? grammar = Shall I, let me ~attempt to help someone

Tense:

Verb + 아/어 주다 / 주시다 / 드리다

사다 -> 사 주다 / 사 주시다 / 사 드리다

읽다 -> 읽어 주다 / 읽어 주시다 / 읽어 드리다

*부르다 -> 불러 주다 / 불러 주시다 / 불러 드리다

교환하다 -> 교환해 주다 / 교환해 주시다 / 교환해 드리다

전화하다 -> 전화해 주다 / 전화해 주시다 / 전화해 드리다

Examples:

*V-아/어 주다 = I (somebody) is doing something beneficial for somebody (me).

1. 친구에게 꽃을 사줬어요.

I bought flowers for my friend.

2. 엄마가 과일을 깎아 주었어요.

My mom peeled the fruit for me.

3. 언니가 케이크를 만들어 주었어요.

My sister made a cake for me.

4. 친구가 돈이 없어서 제가 친구에게 밥을 사 줬어요.

My friend didn't have money, so I bought him a meal.

5. 만날 때마다 그 여자가 도와 주었어요.

Every time we met, she helped me.

6. 어제 이사하는 친구를 도와 주었어요.

I helped my friend move yesterday

*V-아/어 주시다 = an upper person does something beneficial for me

1. 사장님께서 이 가방을 사 주셨어요.

My boss bought this bag for me.

2. 부장님께서 저녁을 사 주셨어요.

My chief treated me to dinner.

3. 어머님께서 과일을 깎아 주셨어요.

My mother peeled the fruit for me.

4. 할머니께서 케이크를 만들어 주셨어요.

My grandmother made me a cake.

5. 부모님은 나한테 초콜릿을 주셨어요.

My parents gave me some chocolate.

6. 우리의 교수님은 우리에게 몇 가지 아이디어를 주셨습니다.

Our professor gave us some ideas.

*V-아/어 드리다 = I do something beneficial for an upper person

1. 할아버지께 선믈을 전해 드렸어요.

I gave a present to my grandfather.

2. 어머니께 집안일을 도와 드렸어요.

I helped my mother with housework.

3. 어머니 생신에는 제가 항상 생일 축하 노래를 불러 드려요.

On my mother's birthday, I always sing a happy birthday song to my mother.

4. 할아버지께서 눈이 나쁘셔서 아버지가 신문을 읽어 드려요.

My grandfather has bad eyesight, so my father reads the newspaper for him.

5. 이번 설날에는 집에 못 가서 부모님께 선물을 보내 드렸어요.

This New Year, I couldn't go home, so I sent a present to my parents.

6. 할머니가 컴퓨터를 처음 사용하셔서 제가 사용법을 알려 드렸어요.

Grandmother used a computer for the first time, so I showed her how to use it.

7. 머리가 아픈데 약 좀 사다 줄래?

- 네, 사다 드릴게요.

I have a headache. Can you buy me some medicine?

- Yes, I'll buy it for you.

8. 짐이 많으데 문 좀 열어 주시겠어요?

- 네, 열어 드릴게요.

I have a lot of luggage. Could you open the door?

- Yes, I'll open it.

9. 죄송하지만 저희 사진 좀 찍어 주시겠어요?

- 네, 찍어 드릴게요.

Excuse me, could you take a picture of us?

- Yes, I'll take a picture for you.
